HOW NOT TO START A SHOW

Despite the fact that we sound check for every show, there’s always a tiny chance that something goes wrong or breaks down.

Yesterday’s show was in De Pul in Uden, in the south of The Netherlands. The venue and the staff were lovely, and we had a pretty smooth and relaxed load, set up in and sound check. I had plenty of time to do my hair and make up for a change, so we were all quite relaxed when it was show time. The band got on stage as usual, started “Moving” as usual, but when I started singing my mic didn’t work. I didn’t walk on stage and sound engineer Ben came rushing backstage. The band stopped the song after the first chorus, trying to find out what the problem was.

Because it is a wireless mic, it can be quite hard to find out what exactly the problem is; it can be a lead, a switch, a mute button, the mic itself or something with the signal between the transmitter and receiver. And to make it even more difficult, I am wearing the transmitter underneath several layers of clothes.

It was very hard for the band to see what was happening, but I had removed all the layers of clothes, and Ben was testing different microphones and running back and forth between his desk and me, trying to find the problem. I could hear the audience talking, and I noticed the band got ready to start the song again when I was still in my underwear. I managed to signal I wasn’t ready yet and tried to get someone to play some music in the room.

After about 15 minutes of maximum stress, everything was working fine and we started the show. Normally, I do my last stretches while we're all standing at the side of the stage, and it helps me focus and get into character (I never realized how important that is until yesterday), but now I had to instantly start the song, which turned out to be really hard! Starting a show with this level of stress must be quite unhealthy, and I had to fight my way through the first couple of songs. For me, it was quite frustrating, but as a performer we try to use these things to our advantage and pour our heart and soul into the performance. I had to get rid of some of the frustration, and for some reason I decided to bang the chair in The Wedding List on the floor. While I was doing that though, I realized Jerney’s hand was right next to the chair (as she was lying dead on the floor). When I peeked around, I was relieved to notice that she had moved her hand.

The second half of the show was a lot more relaxed from my part; I had hugged it out with Jerney and Ben and everything was working properly. I could enjoy the audience even more than in the first set, and a lovely audience it was!

Today we are in my home town Haarlem, on my mum’s birthday too! The band and crew are setting up the stage as I write this, and I have to check the stage in a couple of minutes. We’re struggling a bit because the stage is quite small, but we’ll make it work anyway. I’m really looking forward to tonight’s show!

Thank you al lot for a marvelous show. Indeed we waited for a quarter off an hour before the show started. I was really currious for the show and it was so good!

What a struggle! And very professional approach! I admire you all so much. It is really a wonderful show with great performance: you, Jerney ,the band, everything. Have seen it 3 times now and when you are in NL again (or myself in the UK) I will definitely go to the show again. Hopefully you will add the song The Red Shoes to your setlist, one of my fav's 😇 Good luck, wish you lots of success and thanks for all the moments of pleasure!
