BLOG: FIGHTING A BUG

Though a lot of people here in Liverpool have asked me this week if I was sure I want to live here in this climate, the weather here hasn't been too bad. People here seem to think Holland has a mediterranean climate, but it certainly hasn't! While I can only hope the roof of my bay window back in Holland sustained all the rain that's been gushing down this week, Liverpool has actually been quite sunny this week.

Nonetheless, I have managed to catch a cold. I seem to always pick up a bug in the first week I'm here preparing for a show. The British seem to deal with these things differently than the Dutch. Last Thursday, while I was in a studio recording backing vocals, I have been offered a wide range of alcoholic remedies, which I declined all, since I was brought up with the idea to cure the flu by nothing but sleep, healthy food, herbal tea and maybe, just maybe some paracetamol (but only if you have a severe headache).

So far, this cold has cost me 1.5 dance rehearsals, which is a bit inconvenient, this close to our first show. I am definitely feeling better than I was on Friday, but forgetting to bring my dance clothes to my dance rehearsal today made it clear to me I'm not 100% recovered yet. Thank heavens for my stretch jeans: it was a bit warmer and heavier to dance in them, but at least I can move properly in them! After my warming up, I ran through the new dance routines to get them in my system, and luckily both my body and my voice seem to work better than I expected. It always amazes me how a cold makes me sound like Janis Joplin when I talk but doesn't really seem to affect my voice when I sing.

I think I'll go and call Jerney now with my Janis Joplin voice, to see if we can rehearse some Kate Bush vocals later today...

Always enjoy your Blogs. Hope you are feeling better, best to have cold now instead of gig days. Looking forward to your Concert at Epstein. Perhaps sometime you could say how to pronounce your name, I am not sure how to read it. Enjoy your new home which I guess is in Liverpool, its a great place.

Hi Steph, thanks! Good to hear people are actually enjoying my blogs. Liverpool will be my new home town, and I am indeed feeling a bit better, thanks! I guess my name would be pronounced something like My-kah Breymahn, does that make sense?
